Lipper, Northwest Snapper, Red-throat, Redthroat, Sweetlip, Sweetlip Emperor, Tricky Snapper, Trout, Trumpeter

The Redthroat Emperor, also known as "Red Throat" or simply "RTE," is a prized reef fish found in northern Australia, particularly along the Great Barrier Reef. Recognized by its pinkish-silver body, bright red markings around the throat, and sharp, powerful teeth, this species is a favorite among sport and table fishermen alike.

Habitat & Distribution

Redthroat Emperor prefer coral reefs, rocky outcrops, and sandy drop-offs, typically in waters between 10 to 50 meters deep. They are commonly found around reef edges where they hunt crustaceans, squid, and small fish.

Fishing Techniques

  • Best Bait: Fresh squid, pilchards, prawns, and cut fish baits work well.
  • Lures: Soft plastics and jigs, particularly when worked near the bottom.
  • Tackle: Medium to heavy gear with a running sinker rig or paternoster setup is ideal for reef fishing.

Best Time to Catch

Redthroat Emperor are active year-round but are most abundant in warmer months. Dawn and dusk tend to be the most productive times.

Eating Quality

This species is highly regarded for its firm, white flesh, making it excellent for grilling, baking, or frying. It has a mild, sweet flavor and is a great alternative to coral trout.

Size & Regulations

  • Average Size: 40–60 cm (can grow over 70 cm)
  • Bag & Size Limits: Regulations vary by location, so always check local guidelines before fishing.

Fishing Tip

If you’re targeting Redthroat Emperor, look for isolated reef patches and bommies, as these fish tend to patrol the edges in search of food. A well-presented bait on a fluorocarbon leader will increase your chances of landing a trophy fish!
