Nannygai

Hypseleotris spp.

Nannygai (Hypseleotris spp.), also known as the Red Emperor in some regions, are reef-dwelling fish found along Australia’s northern and central coastlines. These fish are known for their vibrant red color, which contrasts with their white undersides. Nannygai are bottom-dwelling predators that feed on small fish, crustaceans, and other invertebrates that they find near the ocean floor. The species typically grows up to 60 cm in length, with larger individuals often reaching over 1 meter. Nannygai are prized not only for their excellent fight when hooked but also for their tender, sweet flesh, making them a favorite for both recreational and commercial fishing. Nannygai are commonly caught using bottom fishing techniques, where heavy tackle and strong hooks are used to withstand the fish's strong runs. Popular baits include squid, pilchards, and live prawns, as well as large lures. Nannygai are also known for their distinctive "head-shaking" behavior when hooked, which makes for a thrilling catch. The best time to fish for Nannygai is during the cooler months, particularly in areas with rocky reefs or drop-offs. Coastal regions in Queensland, particularly the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday Islands, are known for their Nannygai populations.
