Gurnard

Gurnard

Triglidae

The gurnard is a distinctive bottom-dwelling fish found in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, and parts of the Pacific. Known for its large, wing-like pectoral fins and armored head, the gurnard can "walk" along the seabed using finger-like fin rays to search for food. It’s also notable for producing grunting sounds by vibrating its swim bladder. Common species include the red, grey, and tub gurnard, with the latter featuring striking blue-edged fins. Gurnards are typically caught as bycatch in commercial trawls or by recreational anglers using bait near the seabed. Valued for its firm, white flesh, gurnard is increasingly popular in culinary dishes like fish stews, grilled fillets, and seafood curries.
