Coffin Ray

Hypnos monopterygius

numb ray

The coffin ray, also known as the numbfish, is a small but powerful electric ray found along Australia's southern and eastern coastlines. Unlike most rays, coffin rays are slow-moving bottom dwellers that rely on their strong electric shock (up to 200 volts) to stun prey rather than using a barb or sharp spines for defense. They are commonly encountered by anglers fishing estuaries, sandy seabeds, and shallow coastal waters, especially when targeting species like flathead and whiting.

Although not a prized catch due to their soft, gelatinous body and lack of food value, coffin rays can provide a surprise encounter when accidentally hooked. Anglers should handle them with caution, avoiding direct contact to prevent an unexpected electric shock. If caught, it's best to safely release them by cutting the line near the hook or using a tool to remove the hook while keeping a safe distance.
